Sales SC Down 8.7% This November
Estimated Total SC Sales Figure Totals 2,119.9 Billion Yen
(Down 4.8% Compared with Same Month Previous Year)
The total sales figure for last November realized by existing shopping centers (SC) fell by 8.7% against that for the corresponding month of the previous year, thereby remaining negative for a fifteenth consecutive month with sales reaching their lowest level since the start of this survey in July 2002.
The worsening employment situation due to the economic recession, the government's declaration that the Japanese economy is in deflation and the murky economic prospects did little to provide any stimulatory factors and resulted in both a lower number of purchased units and lower expenditure per customer which consequently led to struggling sales figures.
Furthermore, an irregular succession of holidays early in the month, the decrease of customer numbers due to a new-type influenza and sluggish sales of winter clothes because of unseasonable warm weather all combined to bring SC sales down to a level 1.1 points lower than the previous month, thereby indicating a continuing severe situation for SC.
*This survey has been compiled from information obtained after sampling 1,000 SC according to location and size from among 2,877 SC - the total number of SC at the end of December 2008.
*This survey is based on the 542 SC samples obtained, the sample retrieval rate being 54.2%.
*The JCSC General Meeting of May 21, 2009 issued an announcement stating that the official total number of SC as of the end of December 2008 had been corrected to 2,980 on the basis of newly adapted SC standards. However, (estimated) total sales of SC for November are based on former standards and have been computed based on the total number of 2,918 SC in existence at the end of October 2009.

Analysis based on sales results of SC by region, reveals that sales in the Chubu (-12.3%) and Chugoku (-11.6%) regions decreased sharply with sales in the central areas of the Chubu and Hokuriku regions showing a remarkable drop of -14.0%. However sales in suburban areas of the Kinki region held at -5.0% as a result of favorable sales of casual clothes stores and discount stores.
Analysis based on results of cities designated by government ordinance, reveals that SC sales in Nagoya city continued to decrease, showing a worst of -14.4% with a remarkable unfavorable result for anchor tenants (-15.4%). This was followed by double figure decreases of sales in Hiroshima city (-12.6%) and the Tokyo Special Wards (-10.0%).
Sales in regions outside cities designated by government ordinance equally showed double figure decreases with -11.3% in both the Chubu and Chugoku regions.
