Sales SC Down 7.6% This October
Estimated Total SC Sales Figure Totals 2,115.9 Billion Yen
(Down 6.4% Compared with Same Month Previous Year)
The total sales figure for this October realized by existing shopping centers (SC) fell by 7.6% against that for the corresponding month of the previous year, thereby remaining negative for a fourteenth consecutive month.
The worsening employment situation caused by the economic recession and deflationary concerns further accelerated the tendency to economize, stimulated a preference for low-priced products, lowered the number of purchased units per customer and fostered a reluctance for high‐priced goods, all of which factors resulted in struggling sales further hampered by the unseasonable weather following a typhoon early in the month and the prevalence of a new‐type influenza
Bad sales among anchor tenants, sluggish sales of service- and amusement-related tenants, in addition to reports by many developers of sales decreases due to lease terminations and vacant spaces, meant there were no favorable indications this month and as a result SC sales were down 2.9 points.
However, some SC reported a total tenants' sales increase from 20 to 30% over the same month last year as a result of a double figure increase in casual clothes sales.
*This survey has been compiled from information obtained after sampling 1,000 SC according to location and size from among 2,877SC - the total number of SC at the end of December 2008.
*This survey is based on the 524 SC samples obtained, the sample retrieval rate being 52.4%.
*The JCSC General Meeting of May 21, 2009 issued an announcement stating that the official total number of SC as of the end of December 2008 had been corrected to 2,980 on the basis of newly adapted SC standards. However, (estimated) total sales of SC for October are based on former standards and have been computed based on the total number of 2,909 SC in existence at the end of September 2009.

【comment】
Analysis based on results of SC sales by location and region, reveals that sales in central areas were -9.2%, a drastic decline compared with the peripheral areas (-6.7%) and suburban areas (-6.6%). The -12.1% drop in sales in both the Chubu and Hokuriku regions is particularly remarkable. The growing number of vacant spaces is reportedly the cause of this tendency.
