Sales Shopping Centers Down 8.5% This July
Estimated Total SC Sales Figure Totals 2,392.2 Billion Yen
(Down 3.5% Compared with Same Month Last Year)
The total sales figure for this July realized by existing shopping centers (SC) fell by 8.5% against that for the corresponding month of the previous year, thereby remaining negative for a eleventh consecutive month.
Although the governmental economic measures and marketing of low-priced PB products provided some foothold for consumption, anxiety among consumers as to safeguarding a sustainable livelihood level only intensified, due to both the worsening employment situation and income decrease, and total sales resulted in a further 1.9 point sales figure decrease over last month.
Moreover, the downward reaction resulting from the fact that a large number of SC shifted the start of their summer bargain sales held in July last year, forward to June had a considerable negative impact. The sales slump of midsummer goods due to the rainy season first ending later than usual and then starting again, in addition to lower spending per customer also acted as negative factors and sales reached their lowest level since the start of this survey in July 2002.
Furthermore, in the light of an increasing number of vacant spaces in SC, a growing number of developers pointed at lease termination as the slump cause.
*This survey has been compiled from information obtained after sampling 1,000 SC according to location and size from among 2,877 SC - the total number of SC at the end of December 2008.
*This survey is based on the 581 SC samples obtained, the sample retrieval rate being 58.1%.
*(Estimated) total sales of SC for July have been computed based on the total number of 2,897 SC in existence at the end of June 2009.
The JCSC general meeting on May 21, 2009 issued an announcement stating that the official total number of SC as of the end of December 2008 had on the basis of newly adapted SC standards been corrected to 2,980. However we used the figures by the former standard in this survey.

【comment】
Regardless of regions, sales in central areas showed a large decline. Specifically, sales in central areas of the Hokuriku region and Chubu region fell drastically with respectively 15.5% and 13.5%. Similarly to last month the cause were sluggish sales at SC specializing in apparel at fashion buildings and station buildings.
