Sales SC Down 6.6% This June
Estimated Total SC Sales Figure Totals 2,092.7 Billion Yen
(Down 6.0% Compared with Same Month Last Year)
The total sales figure for this June realized by existing shopping centers fell by 6.6% against that for the corresponding month of the previous year, thereby remaining negative for a tenth consecutive month.
Although additional economic measures taken by the government such as the eco-point scheme and eco-car tax break to some extent stimulated consumption, anxiety among consumers regarding a sustainable livelihood level only intensified due to not only the worsening employment situation but also salary cuts, including summer bonuses, and indications of strengthening consumer confidence have yet to be seen.
Moreover, the fact that the marketing of low-priced PB products and a quantitative decrease of purchased items both helped to create a tendency of lower customer spending in addition to the fact that this June counted one Sunday less than last year all resulted in a further 1.0 point sales figure decrease over last month.
Favorable results booked in some SC can be ascribed to summer bargain sales - last year started in July - having been moved forward to June and the store renewal effect.
*This survey has been compiled from information obtained after sampling 1,000 SC according to location and size from among 2,877 SC - the total number of SC at the end of December 2008.
*This survey is based on the 562 SC samples obtained, the sample retrieval rate being 56.2%.
*(Estimated) total sales of SC for June have been computed based on the total number of 2,894 SC in existence at the end of May 2009.
We announced at the JCSC general meeting in May 21, 2009 that the total number of SC at the end of December 2008 was changed to 2,980 by the new adaptable standard of the SC. However we used the figures by the former standard in this survey.

【comment】
Regardless of region, sales in central areas showed a large decline mainly resulting from sluggish sales at SC such as fashion buildings (fashion malls) and station buildings specializing in apparel.
