Sales SC Down 8.3% This March
Estimated Total SC Sales Figure Totals 2,306.5 Billion Yen
(Down 1.2% Compared with Same Month Last Year)
The total sales figure for this March realized by existing shopping centers fell by 8.3% against that for the corresponding month of the previous year, thereby remaining negative for a seventh consecutive month.
In spite of some favorable factors, notably raw materials prices falling in contrast to last year and commodity prices stabilizing, consumers are growing increasingly concerned about the murky economic prospects and tended to restrict purchases and focused on the lower price-range goods. This resulted in SC sales falling even further below the -7.5% figure for the previous month - the lowest level ever since the start of this survey.
Sales of spring goods were sluggish due to considerable temperature fluctuations during the latter half of this month. Sluggish sales of high-priced items - notably clothing - in the wake of flagging consumer confidence resulting from the economic slowdown, was another factor pulling sales results down.
In addition, this month counted one Saturday less compared with last year and both the number of customers and the per-customer spending decreased, all of these unfavorable factors combining to create a grim SC sales environment.
*This survey has been compiled from information obtained after sampling 1,000 SC according to location and size from among 2,877 SC - the total number of SC at the end of December 2008.
*This survey is based on the 573 SC samples obtained, the sample retrieval rate being 57.3%.
*(Estimated) total sales of SC for March have been computed based on the total number of 2,878 SC in existence at the end of February 2009.

【comment】
Sales in the Shikoku region realized the worst figure (-10.5%), with those in the Kinki region second (-9.9%). The decreases in the former were due to tenant terminations, the latter were affected by partial suspension of business for renewal.
Sales in the Kyushu・Okinawa region on the other hand booked the smallest decline (-2.5%). The sales increase in Fukuoka city boosted overall sales.
