Sales SC Down 4.4% This January
Estimated Total SC Sales Figure Totals 2,637.4 Billion Yen
(Down 0.3% Compared with Same Month Last Year)
The total sales figure for this January realized by existing shopping centers fell by 4.4% against that for the corresponding month of the previous year, thereby remaining negative for a fifth consecutive month. Concern among consumers for the need to safeguard their livelihood is steadily growing against the background of a continuing economic slump brought on by the financial crisis, failure of corporate performances to recover and employment adjustments (such as the laying-off of non-permanent staff and curbs on permanent staff salaries). This has led consumers to focus exclusively on daily living necessaries and further shy away from high-priced goods whereby especially sales of heavy clothing such as overcoats remained dull due to high winter temperatures.
Despite a number of favorable factors, notably the customer appeal of low-priced goods and a shift towards relatively good sales of foodstuffs owing to the cooking-at-home trend, private consumption remained sluggish as a whole.
*This survey has been compiled from information obtained after sampling 1,000 SC according to location and size from among 2,876 SC - the total number of SC at the end of December 2008.

【comment】
Sales figures in all areas were negative.
Although no significant disparity between SC sales figures was observed on a location basis, sales decline proved smallest in central areas (-4.3%) (with suburban areas at -4.4%, peripheral areas at -4.7%).
Classification by tenant type revealed sales of anchor tenants were remarkably sluggish with -6.2%.
In a mood similar to last month, sales of SC with anchor tenants such as supermarkets carrying foodstuffs were relatively good whereas those of SC with anchor tenants such as GMS and specialty stores dealing in clothing stagnated.
