Sales SC Fall 5.4% last December
Estimated Total SC Sales Figure Totals 2,763.0 Billion Yen
(Down 2.2% Compared with Same Month Previous Year)
December sales of previously established shopping centers fell by 5.4% remaining negative for a fourth consecutive month compared with the figure for the same month of the previous year. Amidst a worsening economical situation and an insecure employment outlook resulting from developments in the manufacturing industries, levels this month were at their lowest ever since the launching of this survey in January 2002, and thereby second only to the -5.6% result for February 2005.
Although foodstuff sales indicated a relatively positive trend in line with a new consumer awareness of livelihood safeguards leading to a growing tendency to dine at home and focus purchases on daily living necessaries, consumers were holding back in the clothing section, with high-priced items suffering most.
A positive impact had been expected from year-end sales but lower than usual per capita spending due to consumer reluctance dampened those expectations.
With high winter temperatures translating into dull sales of heavy clothing such as overcoats and this month counting one Saturday and one Sunday less than the corresponding month of the previous year, SC sales in all areas showed negative figures.
*This survey has been compiled from information obtained after sampling 1,000 SC according to location and size from among 2,804 SC - the total number of SC at the end of December 2007.
*This survey is based on the 580 SC samples obtained, the sample retrieval rate being 58.0%.
*(Estimated) total sales of SC for December have been computed based on the total number of 2,872 SC in existence at the end of November 2008.

【comment】
Although sales figures in all areas were negative, those in suburban areas (-4.4%) were smaller than those in central areas (-5.9%) and peripheral areas (-6.2%), possibly as a result of falling gasoline prices.
