Sales SC Fall 1.9% this September
Estimated Total SC Sales Figure Totals 2,157.9Billion Yen
(Up 4.9% Compared with Same Month Last Year)
September sales of previously established shopping centers saw a -1.9% decline for the first time in three months compared with figures for the same month last year.
This came in spite of earlier than usual autumn goods sales and some local positive trends occasioned by SC renewals and events.
In addition to a slump in sales of luxury goods caused by globally plunging stock prices resulting from the collapse of some major US institutions, consumers tend to remain cautious in view of the steadily rising price index as exemplified by the steep food prices and SC sales have not yet succeeded in returning to a profitable base .
Moreover, eating and drinking businesses saw their turnover negatively affected by the need to raise prices as a result of higher basic material prices and by rising gasoline prices that translated into a dwindling number of customers.
As this month in addition also numbered one Saturday and one Sunday less than the same month last year, sales in all nine regions were negative.
*This survey has been compiled from information obtained after sampling 1,000 SC according to location and size from among 2,804 SC - the total number of SC at the end of December 2007.

Sales in central areas of small cities were negative with -5.2% (sales of anchor tenants decreased by -10.0%).
Sales of SC with department stores and GMS as anchor tenants were remarkably sluggish. The large sales output of these negatively affected total SC sales.

Sales in all nine regions were negative.
Sales in Chugoku regions were sluggish with -5.8%. Sales in suburban areas in particular hit a minimum of -8.0%, hinting at the negative influence of high fuel prices on customer flow.
