Sales SC Up 0.3% this August
Estimated Total SC Sales Figure Totals 2,287.9 Billion Yen
(Up 6.1% Compared with Same Month Last Year)
This August, sales of previously established shopping centers remained positive for a second consecutive month with 0.3 % when compared with figures for the same month last year.
This overall small sales increase was realized thanks to a shift towards moderately positive sales of essential necessities including food stuffs and this month having one more Saturday and Sunday than the same month last year whereby sales increases among tenants covered negative sales results among anchor tenants.
However, a gradually increasing number of reluctant consumers with an eye on rising commodity prices, in addition to continuing high gasoline prices mean that similarly to last month, sales of goods other than life necessities remain dull.
There were also many SC recording a smaller than usual number of customers due to the high gasoline prices mentioned above and unexpected heavy rains.
*This survey has been compiled from information obtained after sampling 1,000 SC according to location and size from among 2,804 SC - the total number of SC at the end of December 2007.
*This survey is based on the 572 SC samples obtained, the sample retrieval rate being 57.2%.
*(Estimated) total sales of SC for August have been computed based on the total number of 2,842 SC in existence at the end of July 2008.

Although sales in Chubu regions boasted the largest rise with 3.4%, other regions such as Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kyushu and Okinawa also remained positive for a second consecutive month.
Many SC claimed the good weather as a favorable factor. Noteworthy were Okinawa and Amami-Oshima which, for the period since 1946, recorded the next smallest precipitation after the 1993 August.
