Sales SC Fall 2.3% this May
Estimated Total SC Sales Figure Totals 2,287.6 Billion Yen
(Up 2.6% Compared with Same Month Last Year)
This May, sales of previously established shopping centers fell for two consecutive months with 2.3% when compared with figures for the same month last year.
Sales trends were favorable mainly owing to the fine weather during the "Golden Week", which favored the sales of midsummer goods. However, the weather thereafter took a turn for the worse with a large number of rainy days and a strong cold front moving south.
Moreover, successive gasoline and other price hikes weakened consumer demand.
However, a tendency was also noted whereby some SC sales exceeded those of last year after the unit price of foods went up.
Although Mother's Day-related events had been expected to trigger an increase in sales, they eventually did not significantly affect total sales.
The insecure outlook of the economy is having a strong impact among consumers, leading to a tendency to save.
Classification by tenant type revealed that a majority of SC claimed weak women's apparel sales.
*This survey has been compiled from information obtained after sampling 1,000 SC according to location and size from among 2,804 SC - the total number of SC at the end of December 2007. (The total number of SC at the end of December 2007 reflects the omission of 44SC whose closure became known at the time of the survey carried out at the end of March 2008).
*This survey is based on the 581 SC samples obtained, the sample retrieval rate being 58.1%.
*(Estimated) total sales of SC for May have been computed based on the total number of 2,830 SC in existence at the end of April 2008.

Both sales of anchor tenants and tenants were negative.
As regards tenants, sales of midsummer goods like clothes were dull due to the uneasy weather after the "Golden Week".

Sales in suburban areas fell by 3.9% and were 2.3 points lower than last month. One of the causes was a weaker drift of consumers towards suburban area SC due to gasoline price hike.
