Sales SC Up 2.3% this March
Estimated Total SC Sales Figure Totals 2,334.8 Billion Yen
(Up 4.9% Compared with Same Month Last Year)
Compared with figures for the same month last year, sales of previously established shopping centers rose 2.3% in March and remained positive for three straight months.
Despite fears of modest consumer-spending caused by the continuing tendency to switch to domestically produced foodstuffs after the food poisoning incident involving Chinese-made frozen dumplings and by successive price hikes introduced by producers, per-customer spending showed a tendency to rise.
Other positive factors were falling prices of some imported foodstuffs due to a strong performance of the yen against the dollar, thereby boosting the sales of relevant food products and the larger number of holidays (Sundays) in March compared to last year.
Classification by tenant type revealed that tenants claiming favorable results were processed foodstuffs and the food and drink businesses. As for anchor tenants' sales, sales of fresh and processed foodstuffs showed favorable results.

Sales of anchor tenants increased by 1.6%, setting a record since this statistical survey started in July 2002. The main reason of favorable sales was the fall of imported food prices owing to a strong yen against the dollar.
