Sales SC Up 0.8% this February
Estimated Total SC Sales Figure Totals 1,945.1 Billion Yen
(Up 6.1% Compared with Same Month Last Year)
Compared with figures for the same month last year, sales of previously established shopping centers rose 0.8% in February and were positive for two straight months.
The effect of renewals and the larger number of business days in this leap year may be cited as positive factors. Moreover, the food poisoning scare caused by Chinese-made frozen gyoza dumplings created a tendency among consumers to switch back to domestically produced foodstuffs, thereby slightly - and temporarily - boosting foodstuff sales.
On the other hand, the 'shopping battle' on Valentine's Day, one of the main customer attractions, failed to live up to expectations, customers being discouraged by an unexpected heavy snowfall and low temperatures.
Classification by tenant type revealed that a majority of SC regarded women's apparel sales as a negative factor, blaming the cold weather for the poor sales of spring goods.
Among anchor tenants, many shopping centers mentioned favorable sales of fresh foodstuffs as a positive result factor.
*This survey has been compiled from information obtained after sampling 1,000 SC according to location and size from among 2,848 SC - the total number of SC at the end of December 2007.

Sales of anchor tenants rose by 1.4%, and for the first time in four months exceeded the figures of tenants on a year-over-year comparison.
Although sales of spring goods were unfavorable, anchor tenants such as supermarkets and GMS (dealing in fresh foodstuffs) notched up favorable results so that sales of anchor tenants as a whole turned positive.

Sales in peripheral areas showed a high increase of 3.7%.
As demonstrated by the 2.6% rise of sales in central areas of the large cities, results were favorable in large cities such as those designated by government ordinance, which pattern triggered an increase of sales figures in peripheral areas.

【comment】
Sales in peripheral areas in the Hokuriku region marked a high increase of 11.4%.
Shopping centers enjoying the positive effects of increased floor space and those again returning positive results through renewal, boosted overall sales figures.
However, sales in central areas suffered a severe setback of -6.7% due to the lingering effect of the opening of rival shopping centers.
